Apache Xerces-C++ 2.7.0 memory corruption

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Summaryinfo

A vulnerability described as problematic has been identified in Apache Xerces-C++ 2.7.0. This affects an unknown part. Executing a manipulation can lead to memory corruption. This vulnerability appears as CVE-2009-1885. There is no available exploit.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability classified as problematic was found in Apache Xerces-C++ 2.7.0. This vulnerability affects an unknown code block. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. As an impact it is known to affect availability. CVE summarizes:

Stack consumption vulnerability in validators/DTD/DTDScanner.cpp in Apache Xerces C++ 2.7.0 and 2.8.0 allows context-dependent attackers to cause a denial of service (application crash) via vectors involving nested parentheses and invalid byte values in "simply nested DTD structures," as demonstrated by the Codenomicon XML fuzzing framework.

The weakness was presented 08/11/2009 with Codenomicon as Bug 515515 as not defined bug report (Bugzilla). The advisory is shared for download at bugzilla.redhat.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2009-1885. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available. The current price for an exploit might be approx. USD $5k-$25k (estimation calculated on 08/13/2021).

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 40754 (Fedora 10 : xerces-c27-2.7.0-8.fc10 (2009-8305)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Fedora Local Security Checks.

There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (52321), Tenable (40754), SecurityFocus (BID 35986†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-23273†). Once again VulDB remains the best source for vulnerability data.
