A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, was found in WordPress up to 1.2 (Content Management System). This affects an unknown function of the file wp-login.php of the component Password Reset. The manipulation of the argument key with an unknown input leads to a credentials management vulnerability. wp-login.php in WordPress 2.8.3 and earlier allows remote attackers to force a password reset for the first user in the database, possibly the administrator, via a key[] array variable in a resetpass (aka rp) action, which bypasses a check that assumes that $key is not an array.

The weakness was presented 08/13/2009 by Laurent Gaffie (Website). The advisory is shared at wordpress.org. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2009-2762. The exploitability is told to be easy. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Technical details and a public exploit are known.
