CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability has been found in Linux Kernel 2.6.30/2.6.30.1/2.6.30.2/2.6.30.4 (Operating System) and classified as problematic. This vulnerability affects the function mm_for_maps. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a information disclosure vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-200. The product exposes sensitive information to an actor that is not explicitly authorized to have access to that information. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality. CVE summarizes:

The mm_for_maps function in fs/proc/base.c in the Linux kernel 2.6.30.4 and earlier allows local users to read (1) maps and (2) smaps files under proc/ via vectors related to ELF loading, a setuid process, and a race condition.

The issue has been introduced in 06/09/2009. The weakness was disclosed 08/14/2009 by Kees Cook (Website). The advisory is shared for download at marc.info. This vulnerability was named CVE-2009-2691 since 08/05/2009. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack needs to be approached locally. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1592.

It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 66 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 44951 (Debian DSA-2005-1 : linux-2.6.24 - privilege escalation/denial of service/sensitive memory leak), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Debian Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 175085 (Debian Security Update for Linux-2.6.24 (DSA-2005)).

There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (52401), Tenable (44951), SecurityFocus (BID 36019†), Secunia (SA36265†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-24978†). The entry VDB-49433 is pretty similar. VulDB is the best source for vulnerability data and more expert information about this specific topic.
