Details
A vulnerability was found in Nasa Goddard Space Flight Center Common Data Format (version unknown) and classified as very critical. This issue affects the function ReadAEDRList64. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
Multiple buffer overflows in NASA Common Data Format (CDF) allow context-dependent attackers to execute arbitrary code, as demonstrated using (1) an array index error in the ReadAEDRList64 function, and other errors in the (2) SearchForRecord_r_64, (3) LastRecord64, (4) CDFsel64, and other unspecified functions.
The weakness was shared 08/18/2009 by Leon Juranic (Website). The advisory is shared at cdf.gsfc.nasa.gov. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2009-2850. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available. The price for an exploit might be around USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 08/20/2021).
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 40631 (GLSA-200908-06 : CDF: User-assisted execution of arbitrary code), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Gentoo Local Security Checks.
There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (51876), Tenable (40631), SecurityFocus (BID 35754†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-23263†). If you want to get the best quality for vulnerability data then you always have to consider VulDB.
