Details
A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, has been found in Linux Kernel (Operating System) (the affected version unknown). Affected by this issue is the function mem_cgroup_usage_unregister_event. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a denial of service vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-404. The product does not release or incorrectly releases a resource before it is made available for re-use. Impacted is availability. CVE summarizes:
The mem_cgroup_usage_unregister_event function in mm/memcontrol.c in the Linux kernel before 3.2.10 does not properly handle multiple events that are attached to the same eventfd, which allows local users to cause a denial of service (NULL pointer dereference and system crash) or possibly have unspecified other impact by registering memory threshold events.
The weakness was disclosed 03/07/2012 by Kurt Seifried with Red Hat (oss-sec). The advisory is shared for download at openwall.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2012-1146 since 02/14/2012. The attack needs to be approached locally. A simple authentication is necessary for exploitation. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available.
