The bug was discovered 02/22/2012. The weakness was published 03/10/2012 by Gjoko Krstic (LiquidWorm) with Zero Science Lab (Website). The advisory is shared for download at zeroscience.mk. The public release has been coordinated with the vendor. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. Technical details and also a public exploit are known. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1059.007.
A public exploit has been developed by Gjoko Krstic (LiquidWorm) in HTML and been published immediately after the advisory. It is possible to download the exploit at zeroscience.mk. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 15 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k.
Upgrading to version 5.6.0 SP1 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published before and not just after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
