Maxum Rumpus 6.0 memory corruption

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability has been found in Maxum Rumpus 6.0 and classified as critical. This vulnerability affects an unknown code. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

Multiple buffer overflows in Rumpus before 6.0.1 allow remote attackers to (1) cause a denial of service (segmentation fault) via a long HTTP verb in the HTTP component; and allow remote authenticated users to execute arbitrary code via a long argument to the (2) MKD, (3) XMKD, (4) RMD, and other unspecified commands in the FTP component.

The weakness was presented 08/25/2009 (Website). The advisory is shared for download at securityfocus.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2008-7078 since 08/24/2009. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be initiated remotely. A single authentication is needed for exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available.

A public exploit has been developed by BLUE MOON and been published before and not just after the advisory. It is possible to download the exploit at securityfocus.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 267 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k.

Upgrading to version 6.0 eliminates this vulnerability.
