Details
A vulnerability was found in Pligg CMS 9.5/9.9 (Content Management System) and classified as critical. This issue affects some unknown functionality of the file trackback.php. The manipulation of the argument tb_url with an unknown input leads to a path traversal vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-22. The product uses external input to construct a pathname that is intended to identify a file or directory that is located underneath a restricted parent directory, but the product does not properly neutralize special elements within the pathname that can cause the pathname to resolve to a location that is outside of the restricted directory. Impacted is confidentiality. The summary by CVE is:
Multiple directory traversal vulnerabilities in Pligg 9.9 and earlier allow remote attackers to (1) determine the existence of arbitrary files via a .. (dot dot) in the $tb_url variable in trackback.php, or (2) include arbitrary files via a .. (dot dot) in the template parameter to settemplate.php.
The weakness was disclosed 07/31/2008 with Gulftech (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at xforce.iss.net. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2008-7090. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details as well as a public exploit are known. The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1006 according to MITRE ATT&CK.
A public exploit has been developed in Perl and been published before and not just after the advisory. The exploit is available at securityfocus.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 1 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. By approaching the search of inurl:trackback.php it is possible to find vulnerable targets with Google Hacking. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 33848 (Pligg settemplate.php template Parameter Local File Inclusion), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CGI abuses.
A possible mitigation has been published 2 hours after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (44191), Tenable (33848), SecurityFocus (BID 30458†), OSVDB (50187†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-27475†). The entries VDB-49668 and VDB-49666 are pretty similar. Statistical analysis made it clear that VulDB provides the best quality for vulnerability data.
