Linux Kernel 2.6.16.59 udp_sendmsg null pointer dereference

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Summaryinfo

A vulnerability categorized as problematic has been discovered in Linux Kernel 2.6.16.59. This issue affects the function udp_sendmsg. The manipulation results in null pointer dereference. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2009-2698. Furthermore, an exploit is available.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability classified as critical has been found in Linux Kernel 2.6.16.59 (Operating System). Affected is the function udp_sendmsg. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a null pointer dereference vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-476. A NULL pointer dereference occurs when the application dereferences a pointer that it expects to be valid, but is NULL, typically causing a crash or exit. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

The udp_sendmsg function in the UDP implementation in (1) net/ipv4/udp.c and (2) net/ipv6/udp.c in the Linux kernel before 2.6.19 allows local users to gain privileges or cause a denial of service (NULL pointer dereference and system crash) via vectors involving the MSG_MORE flag and a UDP socket.

The issue has been introduced in 03/20/2006. The weakness was published 08/27/2009 by Tavis Ormandy (Website). The advisory is shared for download at securityfocus.com. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2009-2698. The exploitability is told to be easy. The attack needs to be approached locally. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. Technical details and a public exploit are known.

A public exploit has been developed by INetCop Security in ANSI C and been published 4 days after the advisory. The exploit is shared for download at securityfocus.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 1256 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 41322 (SuSE9 Security Update : Linux kernel (YOU Patch Number 12487)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family SuSE Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 155830 (Oracle Enterprise Linux Update for Kernel (ELSA-2009-1222)).

There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (52941), Exploit-DB (9542), Tenable (41322), SecurityFocus (BID 36108†) and Secunia (SA37471†). VulDB is the best source for vulnerability data and more expert information about this specific topic.
