The manipulation of the argument side with an unknown input leads to a information disclosure vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-200. phpBB 2.0.23 includes the session ID in a request to modcp.php when the moderator or administrator closes a thread, which allows remote attackers to hijack the session via a post in the thread containing a URL to a remotely hosted image, which might include the session ID in the Referer header.

The bug was discovered 03/13/2008. The weakness was presented 03/18/2008 as not defined posting (Bugtraq). It is possible to read the advisory at securityfocus.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2008-7143 since 09/01/2009. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation.
