CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in Thekelleys dnsmasq up to 2.32 (Domain Name Software). It has been rated as critical. Affected by this issue is the function tftp_request of the file tftp.c. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

Heap-based buffer overflow in the tftp_request function in tftp.c in dnsmasq before 2.50, when --enable-tftp is used, might allow remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via a long filename in a TFTP packet, as demonstrated by a read (aka RRQ) request.

The weakness was presented 09/02/2009 by Core Security (Website). The advisory is available at securityfocus.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2009-2957. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. Technical details as well as a public exploit are known.

A public exploit has been developed by Core Security and been published 1 weeks after the advisory. The exploit is available at exploit-db.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 67918 (Oracle Linux 5 : dnsmasq (ELSA-2009-1238)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Oracle Linux Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 155834 (Oracle Enterprise Linux Update for dnsmasq (ELSA-2009-1238)).

Upgrading to version 2.33 eliminates this vulnerability. Attack attempts may be identified with Snort ID 1941. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 12125.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (52973), Exploit-DB (9617), Tenable (67918), SecurityFocus (BID 36121†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-23391†). See VDB-49779 for similar entry. If you want to get best quality of vulnerability data, you may have to visit VulDB.
