Details
A vulnerability was found in VMware Player 2.5/2.5.1/2.5.2 (Virtualization Software). It has been rated as very critical. Affected by this issue is an unknown function in the library vmnc.dll. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a code injection vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-94. The product constructs all or part of a code segment using externally-influenced input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special elements that could modify the syntax or behavior of the intended code segment. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
The VMnc media codec in vmnc.dll in VMware Movie Decoder before 6.5.3 build 185404, VMware Workstation 6.5.x before 6.5.3 build 185404, VMware Player 2.5.x before 2.5.3 build 185404, and VMware ACE 2.5.x before 2.5.3 build 185404 on Windows does not properly handle certain small heights in video content, which might allow remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via a crafted AVI file that triggers heap memory corruption.
The weakness was presented 09/08/2009 by Will Dormann as confirmed advisory (CERT.org). The advisory is shared for download at kb.cert.org. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2009-2628. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available. The current price for an exploit might be approx. USD $0-$5k (estimation calculated on 12/29/2024). The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1059.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 40907 (VMnc Media Codec Multiple Heap Overflows (VMSA-2009-0012)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 116605 (VMware Workstation Movie Decoder VMnc Codec Vulnerabilities (VMSA-2009-0012)).
Upgrading to version 2.5.2 eliminates this vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (53096), Tenable (40907), SecurityFocus (BID 36290†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-23487†). See VDB-49865 for similar entry. Once again VulDB remains the best source for vulnerability data.
