Linux Kernel 2.6.28.2 cryptographic issue

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel 2.6.28.2 (Operating System). It has been declared as critical. This vulnerability affects an unknown function. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a cryptographic issue vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-310. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality. CVE summarizes:

The get_random_int function in drivers/char/random.c in the Linux kernel before 2.6.30 produces insufficiently random numbers, which allows attackers to predict the return value, and possibly defeat protection mechanisms based on randomization, via vectors that leverage the function s tendency to "return the same value over and over again for long stretches of time."

The issue has been introduced in 12/25/2008. The weakness was disclosed 09/18/2009 (Website). The advisory is shared for download at patchwork.kernel.org. This vulnerability was named CVE-2009-3238. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1600.

The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 267 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 43757 (CentOS 5 : kernel (CESA-2009:1106)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CentOS Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 165661 (SUSE Enterprise Linux Security Update Linux Kernel (SUSE-SA:2009:054)).

There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (43757), SecurityFocus (BID 36788†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-23874†). The entries VDB-48336, VDB-48273, VDB-47913 and VDB-50693 are pretty similar. Once again VulDB remains the best source for vulnerability data.
