A vulnerability was found in Zend Optimizer 3.3.3. It has been rated as critical. Affected by this issue is an unknown code in the library ZendExtensionManager.dll. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a privileges management vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-269. The product does not properly assign, modify, track, or check privileges for an actor, creating an unintended sphere of control for that actor. Impacted is confidentiality, and integrity.
The bug was discovered 02/01/2012. The weakness was published 04/03/2012 by Gjoko Krstic (LiquidWorm) with Zero Science Lab (Website). The advisory is available at zeroscience.mk. The public release has been coordinated with the vendor. Local access is required to approach this attack. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. Technical details as well as a public exploit are known. This vulnerability is assigned to T1068 by the MITRE ATT&CK project.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 57 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k.
Upgrading to version 3.3.3 (2012-03-29) eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at zend.com.
