Apache Hadoop up to 0.20.205.0/1.0.1/0.23.1 Kerberos/MapReduce Security Feature cryptographic issue

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability classified as problematic was found in Apache Hadoop up to 0.20.205.0/1.0.1/0.23.1 (Network Management Software). This vulnerability affects some unknown processing of the component Kerberos/MapReduce Security Feature. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a cryptographic issue vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-310. As an impact it is known to affect integrity. CVE summarizes:

The Kerberos/MapReduce security functionality in Apache Hadoop 0.20.203.0 through 0.20.205.0, 0.23.x before 0.23.2, and 1.0.x before 1.0.2, as used in Cloudera CDH CDH3u0 through CDH3u2, Cloudera hadoop-0.20-sbin before 0.20.2+923.197, and other products, allows remote authenticated users to impersonate arbitrary cluster user accounts via unspecified vectors.

The weakness was disclosed 04/07/2012 by Aaron T. Myers with Cloudera as File 111656 (Packetstorm). The advisory is shared for download at packetstormsecurity.org. This vulnerability was named CVE-2012-1574 since 03/12/2012. The attack can be initiated remotely. Required for exploitation is a single authentication. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1600.

A public exploit has been developed by Aaron T. Myers. It is possible to download the exploit at packetstormsecurity.org. It is declared as proof-of-concept. As 0-day the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 11921 (Cloudera CDH Remote Code Execution Vulnerability.).

Upgrading to version 0.23.2 or 1.0.2 eliminates this vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at SecurityFocus (BID 52939†), OSVDB (80981†) and Secunia (SA48715†). Additional details are provided at packetstormsecurity.org.
