Summary
A vulnerability described as problematic has been identified in FreeBSD 6.3/6.4. Affected by this issue is the function close. The manipulation results in race condition.
This vulnerability is known as CVE-2009-3527. Furthermore, an exploit is available.
Upgrading the affected component is recommended.
Details
A vulnerability was found in FreeBSD 6.3/6.4 (Operating System). It has been classified as critical. Affected is the function close. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a race condition vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-362. The product contains a code sequence that can run concurrently with other code, and the code sequence requires temporary, exclusive access to a shared resource, but a timing window exists in which the shared resource can be modified by another code sequence that is operating concurrently. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
Race condition in the Pipe (IPC) close function in FreeBSD 6.3 and 6.4 allows local users to cause a denial of service (crash) or gain privileges via vectors related to kqueues, which triggers a use after free, leading to a NULL pointer dereference or memory corruption.
The weakness was published 10/02/2009 by Przemyslaw Frasunek (Website). The advisory is available at securitytracker.com. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2009-3527 since 10/02/2009. Local access is required to approach this attack. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. Technical details and a public exploit are known.
A public exploit has been developed in ANSI C. The exploit is shared for download at securityfocus.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. As 0-day the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k.
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability.
