RPM before 4.9.1.3 does not properly validate region tags, which allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (crash) and possibly execute arbitrary code via an invalid region tag in a package header to the (1) headerLoad, (2) rpmReadSignature, or (3) headerVerify function.

The weakness was presented 04/03/2012 by Ramon de C Valle as confirmed mailinglist post (oss-sec). The advisory is available at openwall.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2012-0060 since 12/07/2011. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not available.
