Details
A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in Linux Kernel 2.6.31 (Operating System). Affected by this issue is the function d_delete. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a null pointer dereference vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-476. A NULL pointer dereference occurs when the application dereferences a pointer that it expects to be valid, but is NULL, typically causing a crash or exit. Impacted is availability. CVE summarizes:
The d_delete function in fs/ecryptfs/inode.c in eCryptfs in the Linux kernel 2.6.31 allows local users to cause a denial of service (kernel OOPS) and possibly execute arbitrary code via unspecified vectors that cause a "negative dentry" and trigger a NULL pointer dereference, as demonstrated via a Mutt temporary directory in an eCryptfs mount.
The issue has been introduced in 09/09/2009. The weakness was published 10/13/2009 (Website). The advisory is shared for download at securityfocus.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2009-2908. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack needs to be approached locally. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 34 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 42156 (Fedora 10 : kernel-2.6.27.37-170.2.104.fc10 (2009-10525)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Fedora Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 116971 (VMware ESX Service Console and vMA Third Party Updates (VMSA-2010-0004)).
There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (53693), Tenable (42156), SecurityFocus (BID 36639†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-23779†).
