Adobe Reader and Acrobat 7.x before 7.1.4, 8.x before 8.1.7, and 9.x before 9.2 do not properly validate input, which might allow attackers to bypass intended Trust Manager restrictions via unspecified vectors.
The weakness was presented 10/19/2009 by Stefano Di Paola with Apple Product Security (Website). The advisory is shared for download at us-cert.gov. This vulnerability was named CVE-2009-2981 since 08/27/2009. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available.

Upgrading to version 9.0 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 8658.
