Multiple format string vulnerabilities in HTTP Application Intelligence (AI) component in Check Point Firewall-1 NG-AI R55 and R54, and Check Point Firewall-1 HTTP Security Server included with NG FP1, FP2, and FP3 allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via HTTP requests that cause format string specifiers to be used in an error message, as demonstrated using the scheme of a URI.
The bug was discovered 02/04/2004. The weakness was published 02/04/2004 by Mark Dowd with ISS X-Force (Website). The advisory is shared at xforce.iss.net. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2004-0039. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details are unknown but an exploit is available.

The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 34018 (Multiple Check Point FireWall-1 HTTP Security Server Remote Format String Vulnerabilities).
Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at checkpoint.com. Attack attempts may be identified with Snort ID 2381. In this case the pattern |3A|/ is used for detection. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 31344.
