Adobe Acrobat Reader up to 8.2.4 cPath input validation

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability classified as critical was found in Adobe Acrobat Reader (Document Reader Software). This vulnerability affects some unknown functionality. The manipulation of the argument cPath with an unknown input leads to a input validation vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-20. The product receives input or data, but it does not validate or incorrectly validates that the input has the properties that are required to process the data safely and correctly. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

The JavaScript for Acrobat API in Adobe Reader and Acrobat 7.x before 7.1.4, 8.x before 8.1.7, and 9.x before 9.2 does not properly implement the (1) Privileged Context and (2) Safe Path restrictions for unspecified JavaScript methods, which allows remote attackers to create arbitrary files, and possibly execute arbitrary code, via the cPath parameter in a crafted PDF file. NOTE: some of these details are obtained from third party information.

The weakness was published 10/19/2009 by Richard van Eeden with IOActive (Website). The advisory is shared for download at us-cert.gov. This vulnerability was named CVE-2009-2993 since 08/27/2009. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available.

It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 42119 (Adobe Acrobat < 9.2 / 8.1.7 / 7.1.4 Multiple Vulnerabilities (APSB09-15)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 116635 (Adobe Reader and Acrobat Remote Code Execution Vulnerability (APSB09-15)).

Upgrading to version 9.0 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 8658.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (42119), SecurityFocus (BID 36664†), SecurityTracker (ID 1023007†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-23800†). Similar entries are available at VDB-2793, VDB-4037, VDB-4041 and VDB-4039. Once again VulDB remains the best source for vulnerability data.
