Adobe Acrobat 9.x before 9.2, 8.x before 8.1.7, and possibly 7.x through 7.1.4 allows attackers to cause a denial of service (memory corruption) or possibly execute arbitrary code via unspecified vectors.
The weakness was disclosed 10/19/2009 by Stefano Di Paola with Apple Product Security (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at us-cert.gov. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2009-3460 since 09/29/2009. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 42119 (Adobe Acrobat < 9.2 / 8.1.7 / 7.1.4 Multiple Vulnerabilities (APSB09-15)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 116635 (Adobe Reader and Acrobat Remote Code Execution Vulnerability (APSB09-15)).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 8658.
