Details
A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, was found in Linux Kernel 2.6.16.9 (Operating System). This affects some unknown processing. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a information disclosure vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-200. The product exposes sensitive information to an actor that is not explicitly authorized to have access to that information. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality. The summary by CVE is:
arch/x86/ia32/ia32entry.S in the Linux kernel before 2.6.31.4 on the x86_64 platform does not clear certain kernel registers before a return to user mode, which allows local users to read register values from an earlier process by switching an ia32 process to 64-bit mode.
The issue has been introduced in 03/20/2006. The weakness was released 10/20/2009 by Jan Beulich (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at redhat.com. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2009-2910. The exploitability is told to be easy. Attacking locally is a requirement. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available. The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1592 according to MITRE ATT&CK.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 1310 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 67973 (Oracle Linux 4 : kernel (ELSA-2009-1671)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Oracle Linux Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 165659 (SUSE Enterprise Linux Security Update Linux Kernel (SUSE-SA:2009:051)).
There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (67973), SecurityFocus (BID 36576†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-23781†). Entries connected to this vulnerability are available at VDB-50510 and VDB-49718. Be aware that VulDB is the high quality source for vulnerability data.
