libraries/libldap/tls_o.c in OpenLDAP 2.2 and 2.4, and possibly other versions, when OpenSSL is used, does not properly handle a \0 character in a domain name in the subject s Common Name (CN) field of an X.509 certificate, which allows man-in-the-middle attackers to spoof arbitrary SSL servers via a crafted certificate issued by a legitimate Certification Authority, a related issue to CVE-2009-2408.

The weakness was published 10/23/2009 by Joe Orton (Website). The advisory is available at vupen.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2009-3767. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit. This vulnerability is assigned to T1600 by the MITRE ATT&CK project.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 68065 (Oracle Linux 4 : openldap (ELSA-2010-0543)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Oracle Linux Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 118569 (VMware ESX Third Party Updates for Service Console (VMSA-2010-0015)).
