The handle_dr function in arch/x86/kvm/vmx.c in the KVM subsystem in the Linux kernel before 2.6.31.1 does not properly verify the Current Privilege Level (CPL) before accessing a debug register, which allows guest OS users to cause a denial of service (trap) on the host OS via a crafted application.

The issue has been introduced in 12/25/2008. The weakness was presented 10/30/2009 as Bug 531660 as not defined bug report (Bugzilla). The advisory is available at bugzilla.redhat.com. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2009-3722 since 10/16/2009. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit. This vulnerability is assigned to T1068 by the MITRE ATT&CK project.

The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 309 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 68005 (Oracle Linux 5 : kvm (ELSA-2010-0126)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.
