TYPO3 up to 4.2.0 Backend code injection

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Summaryinfo

A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, was found in TYPO3 up to 4.2.0. This affects an unknown part of the component Backend. Executing a manipulation can lead to code injection. This vulnerability appears as CVE-2009-3631. There is no available exploit.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in TYPO3 up to 4.2.0 (Content Management System). It has been declared as critical. This vulnerability affects some unknown functionality of the component Backend. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a code injection vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-94. The product constructs all or part of a code segment using externally-influenced input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special elements that could modify the syntax or behavior of the intended code segment. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

The Backend subcomponent in TYPO3 4.0.13 and earlier, 4.1.x before 4.1.13, 4.2.x before 4.2.10, and 4.3.x before 4.3beta2, when the DAM extension or ftp upload is enabled, allows remote authenticated users to execute arbitrary commands via shell metacharacters in a filename.

The weakness was presented 11/02/2009 by Bernhard Kraft (Jelmer) (Website). The advisory is shared for download at vupen.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2009-3631. The attack can be initiated remotely. A single authentication is required for exploitation. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available. The current price for an exploit might be approx. USD $5k-$25k (estimation calculated on 02/16/2025). The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1059.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 44791 (Debian DSA-1926-1 : typo3-src - several vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Debian Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 175007 (Debian Security Update for Typo3 (DSA-1926)).

There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (53923), Tenable (44791), SecurityFocus (BID 36801†), Secunia (SA37122†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-23945†). See VDB-50673, VDB-50672, VDB-50671 and VDB-50670 for similar entries. Once again VulDB remains the best source for vulnerability data.
