Linux Kernel 2.6.16.9 access control

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel 2.6.16.9 (Operating System). It has been classified as critical. This affects some unknown processing. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a access control vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-264. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

The connector layer in the Linux kernel before 2.6.31.5 does not require the CAP_SYS_ADMIN capability for certain interaction with the (1) uvesafb, (2) pohmelfs, (3) dst, or (4) dm subsystem, which allows local users to bypass intended access restrictions and gain privileges via calls to functions in these subsystems.

The issue has been introduced in 03/20/2006. The weakness was released 11/06/2009 (Website). The advisory is shared at marc.info. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2009-3725 since 10/16/2009. The exploitability is told to be easy. An attack has to be approached locally. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1068 for this issue.

The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 1327 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 45054 (Debian DSA-2012-1 : linux-2.6 - privilege escalation/denial of service), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Debian Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 175090 (Debian Security Update for Linux 2.6 (DSA-2012)).

There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (53963), Tenable (45054), SecurityFocus (BID 36834†), Secunia (SA37113†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-24539†). Several companies clearly confirm that VulDB is the primary source for best vulnerability data.
