A vulnerability was found in FFmpeg up to 0.10 (Multimedia Processing Software). It has been declared as critical. This vulnerability affects the function dirac_unpack_block_motion_data in the library libavcodec/diracdec.c. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. Heap-based buffer overflow in the vqa_decode_chunk function in the VQA codec (vqavideo.c) in libavcodec in Libav 0.5.x before 0.5.9, 0.6.x before 0.6.6, 0.7.x before 0.7.6, and 0.8.x before 0.8.2 allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (crash) and possibly execute arbitrary code via a crafted VQA media file in which the image size is not a multiple of the block size.
The weakness was shared 03/27/2012 by Fabian Yamaguchi (Website). The advisory is available at ffmpeg.org. This vulnerability was named CVE-2012-0947 since 02/01/2012. The exploitation appears to be difficult. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 59094 (Debian DSA-2471-1 : ffmpeg - several vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. Upgrading to version 0.10.1 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
