Details
A vulnerability classified as critical was found in Sun JRE 1.6.0 (Programming Language Software). This vulnerability affects some unknown functionality. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a remote code execution vulnerability. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
The Java Web Start implementation in Sun Java SE 6 before Update 17 does not properly handle the interaction between a signed JAR file and a JNLP (1) application or (2) applet, which has unspecified impact and attack vectors, related to a "regression," aka Bug Id 6870531.
The weakness was disclosed 11/09/2009 by Peter Vreugdenhil (regenrecht) with iDEFENSE as Bug 532914 as not defined bug report (Bugzilla). The advisory is shared for download at bugzilla.redhat.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2009-3886. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available.
A public exploit has been developed in Java. It is possible to download the exploit at securityfocus.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. As 0-day the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 42834 (GLSA-200911-02 : Sun JDK/JRE: Multiple vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Gentoo Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 116678 (Sun Java JDK and JRE Multiple Vulnerabilities).
Upgrading to version 1.6.0 eliminates this vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 8404.
