Microsoft Office 2004/2008 Spreadsheet code injection

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in Microsoft Office 2004/2008 (Office Suite Software) and classified as very critical. Affected by this issue is an unknown function of the component Spreadsheet. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a code injection vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-94. The product constructs all or part of a code segment using externally-influenced input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special elements that could modify the syntax or behavior of the intended code segment. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

Microsoft Office Excel 2002 SP3, 2003 SP3, and 2007 SP1 and SP2; Office 2004 and 2008 for Mac; Open XML File Format Converter for Mac; Office Excel Viewer 2003 SP3; Office Excel Viewer SP1 and SP2; and Office Compatibility Pack for Word, Excel, and PowerPoint 2007 File Formats SP1 and SP2 allow remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via a spreadsheet containing a malformed formula, related to a "pointer corruption" issue, aka "Excel Index Parsing Vulnerability."

The weakness was disclosed 11/11/2009 by Nicolas Joly with VUPEN Security (Website). The advisory is shared for download at us-cert.gov. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2009-3132. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available. The current price for an exploit might be approx. USD $5k-$25k (estimation calculated on 01/05/2025). The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1059.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 50063 (MS09-067 / MS09-068: Vulnerabilities in Microsoft Office Could Allow Remote Code Execution (972652 / 976307) (Mac OS X)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family MacOS X Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 110096 (Microsoft Office Excel Remote Code Execution Vulnerabilities (MS09-067)).

There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 9252.
