Cross-site scripting (XSS) vulnerability in wp-admin/press-this.php in WordPress before 2.8.6 allows remote authenticated users to inject arbitrary web script or HTML via the s parameter (aka the selection variable).
The weakness was presented 11/12/2009 by Benjamin Flesch (oss-sec). The advisory is shared at openwall.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2009-3891 since 11/05/2009. The attack can be launched remotely. Required for exploitation is a single authentication. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1059.007 for this issue.
By approaching the search of inurl:press-this.php it is possible to find vulnerable targets with Google Hacking. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 42808 (FreeBSD : wordpress -- multiple vulnerabilities (0640198a-d117-11de-b667-0030843d3802)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family FreeBSD Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 116849 (Fedora Update for wordpress-mu (FEDORA-2009-12547)).
Upgrading to version 2.0.5 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published before and not just after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
