Serv-U up to 9.1.0.0 memory corruption

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Summaryinfo

A vulnerability labeled as critical has been found in Serv-U. Impacted is an unknown function. Such manipulation leads to memory corruption. This vulnerability is listed as CVE-2009-4006. In addition, an exploit is available. The affected component should be upgraded.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in Serv-U (File Transfer Software). It has been rated as very critical. Affected by this issue is an unknown part. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

Stack-based buffer overflow in the TEA decoding algorithm in RhinoSoft Serv-U FTP server 7.0.0.1, 9.0.0.5, and other versions before 9.1.0.0 allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via a long hexadecimal string.

The weakness was presented 11/18/2009 with Secunia Research (Website). The advisory is available at xforce.iss.net. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2009-4006. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available. The structure of the vulnerability defines a possible price range of USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 11/17/2025).

The exploit is available at exploit-db.com. It is declared as highly functional. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 42934 (Serv-U < 9.1.0.0), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family FTP.

Upgrading to version 7.2.0.0 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (54322), Exploit-DB (16775), Tenable (42934), SecurityFocus (BID 37051†) and OSVDB (60427†). See VDB-53351 for similar entry. If you want to get best quality of vulnerability data, you may have to visit VulDB.
