A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, was found in Curtis Galloway libexif 0.6.18. Affected is the function exif_entry_fix of the file libexif/libexif/exif-entry.c. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. Heap-based buffer overflow in the exif_entry_fix function (aka the tag fixup routine) in libexif/exif-entry.c in libexif 0.6.18 allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service or possibly execute arbitrary code via an invalid EXIF image. NOTE: some of these details are obtained from third party information.
The weakness was disclosed 11/13/2009 (Website). The advisory is available at libexif.cvs.sourceforge.net. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2009-3895 since 11/05/2009. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 119913 (Solaris Libexif Multiple Vulnerabilities).
A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
