nginx up to 0.8.9 path traversal

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability classified as problematic was found in nginx up to 0.8.9 (Web Server). Affected by this vulnerability is an unknown functionality. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a path traversal vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-22. The product uses external input to construct a pathname that is intended to identify a file or directory that is located underneath a restricted parent directory, but the product does not properly neutralize special elements within the pathname that can cause the pathname to resolve to a location that is outside of the restricted directory. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, and integrity. The summary by CVE is:

Directory traversal vulnerability in src/http/modules/ngx_http_dav_module.c in nginx (aka Engine X) before 0.7.63, and 0.8.x before 0.8.17, allows remote authenticated users to create or overwrite arbitrary files via a .. (dot dot) in the Destination HTTP header for the WebDAV (1) COPY or (2) MOVE method.

The weakness was published 11/24/2009 (oss-sec). The advisory is shared at openwall.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2009-3898 since 11/05/2009. The attack can be launched remotely. The successful exploitation needs a single authentication. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1006 for this issue.

It is possible to download the exploit at exploit-db.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 59614 (GLSA-201203-22 : nginx: Multiple vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Gentoo Local Security Checks.

Upgrading to version 0.8.10 eliminates this vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Exploit-DB (9829), Tenable (59614), Secunia (SA36818†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-44702†). Similar entry is available at VDB-50903. Several companies clearly confirm that VulDB is the primary source for best vulnerability data.
