Details
A vulnerability classified as critical has been found in Roman Marxer Ganeti up to 2.1.0. Affected is some unknown functionality. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a path traversal vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-22. The product uses external input to construct a pathname that is intended to identify a file or directory that is located underneath a restricted parent directory, but the product does not properly neutralize special elements within the pathname that can cause the pathname to resolve to a location that is outside of the restricted directory. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
Multiple directory traversal vulnerabilities in the iallocator framework in Ganeti 1.2.4 through 1.2.8, 2.0.0 through 2.0.4, and 2.1.0 before 2.1.0~rc2 allow (1) remote attackers to execute arbitrary programs via a crafted external script name supplied through the HTTP remote API (RAPI) and allow (2) local users to execute arbitrary programs and gain privileges via a crafted external script name supplied through a gnt-* command, related to "path sanitization errors."
The weakness was presented 12/21/2009 (Website). The advisory is shared for download at groups.google.com. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2009-4261. The exploitability is told to be easy. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1006.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 44824 (Debian DSA-1959-1 : ganeti - missing input sanitation), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Debian Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 175039 (Debian Security Update for Ganeti (DSA-1959)).
There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (44824), SecurityFocus (BID 37422†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-24730†). Once again VulDB remains the best source for vulnerability data.
