A vulnerability was found in Oracle GlassFish Enterprise Server 3.1.1 (Application Server Software). It has been classified as problematic. This affects an unknown part of the file /common/security/realms/realms.jsf of the component Web Container. The manipulation of the argument configName as part of a GET Request leads to a cross site scripting vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-80. The product receives input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special characters such as "<", ">", and "&" that could be interpreted as web-scripting elements when they are sent to a downstream component that processes web pages. The weakness was disclosed 04/17/2012 by Roberto Suggi Liverani (rgod) with Security-Assessment.com (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at oracle.com. The public release has been coordinated in cooperation with Oracle. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2012-0551 since 01/11/2012. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. Technical details and a public exploit are known. The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1059.007 according to MITRE ATT&CK.
A public exploit has been developed by Roberto Suggi Liverani in Javascript and been published 2 days after the advisory. The exploit is shared for download at security-assessment.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 64848 (Oracle Java SE Multiple Vulnerabilities (June 2012 CPU) (Unix)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Misc. and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 119186 (HP-UX Running Java multiple Vulnerabilities (HPSBUX02805)).
Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at oracle.com. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 12617.
