MIT Kerberos 5-1.7 Key Distribution Center prep_reprocess_req null pointer dereference

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, has been found in MIT Kerberos 5-1.7 (Network Authentication Software). This issue affects the function prep_reprocess_req of the component Key Distribution Center. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a null pointer dereference vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-476. A NULL pointer dereference occurs when the application dereferences a pointer that it expects to be valid, but is NULL, typically causing a crash or exit. Impacted is availability. The summary by CVE is:

The prep_reprocess_req function in kdc/do_tgs_req.c in the cross-realm referral implementation in the Key Distribution Center (KDC) in MIT Kerberos 5 (aka krb5) 1.7 before 1.7.1 allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (NULL pointer dereference and daemon crash) via a ticket request.

The weakness was shared 12/29/2009 by jorgen (Website). The advisory is shared at vupen.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2009-3295 since 09/22/2009. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available.

It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 44880 (Fedora 12 : krb5-1.7-15.fc12 (2009-13539)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Fedora Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 165583 (SUSE Enterprise Linux Security Update krb5 (SUSE-SA:2010:006)).

Upgrading to version 5-1.7 eliminates this vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (44880), SecurityFocus (BID 37486†), Secunia (SA37977†), SecurityTracker (ID 1023392†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-24510†). Several companies clearly confirm that VulDB is the primary source for best vulnerability data.
