A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, has been found in Zabbix up to 1.4.6 (Network Management Software). Affected by this issue is the function process_trap. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. Impacted is availability. The process_trap function in trapper/trapper.c in Zabbix Server before 1.6.6 allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (crash) via a crafted request with data that lacks an expected : (colon) separator, which triggers a NULL pointer dereference.

The weakness was shared 12/31/2009 by Alex (Website). The advisory is available at support.zabbix.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2009-4500 since 12/30/2009. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. Technical details as well as a public exploit are known.

A public exploit has been developed in Perl. The exploit is available at securityfocus.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept.

Upgrading to version 1.4.4 eliminates this vulnerability.
