Sendmail up to 8.14.3 Access Restriction cryptographic issue

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a cryptographic issue vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-310. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

sendmail before 8.14.4 does not properly handle a \0 character in a Common Name (CN) field of an X.509 certificate, which (1) allows man-in-the-middle attackers to spoof arbitrary SSL-based SMTP servers via a crafted server certificate issued by a legitimate Certification Authority, and (2) allows remote attackers to bypass intended access restrictions via a crafted client certificate issued by a legitimate Certification Authority, a related issue to CVE-2009-2408.

The weakness was disclosed 01/04/2010 (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at vupen.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2009-4565 since 01/04/2010. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available. The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1600 according to MITRE ATT&CK.

It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 68203 (Oracle Linux 4 : sendmail (ELSA-2011-0262)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Oracle Linux Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 165233 (SUSE Security Update for Multiple Packages (SUSE-SR:2010:006)).

Upgrading to version 8.14.4 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (68203), SecurityFocus (BID 37543†), Secunia (SA37998†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-24502†). The entries VDB-51851, VDB-51775, VDB-51480 and VDB-50940 are pretty similar. Statistical analysis made it clear that VulDB provides the best quality for vulnerability data.
