Details
A vulnerability was found in HP Power Manager up to 4.2.6 and classified as very critical. This issue affects an unknown code. The manipulation of the argument fileName with an unknown input leads to a path traversal vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-22. The product uses external input to construct a pathname that is intended to identify a file or directory that is located underneath a restricted parent directory, but the product does not properly neutralize special elements within the pathname that can cause the pathname to resolve to a location that is outside of the restricted directory. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
Directory traversal vulnerability in goform/formExportDataLogs in HP Power Manager before 4.2.10 allows remote attackers to overwrite arbitrary files, and execute arbitrary code, via directory traversal sequences in the fileName parameter.
The weakness was shared 01/20/2010 by Alin Rad Pop with Secunia Research (Website). The advisory is shared at securityfocus.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2009-4000. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available. The price for an exploit might be around USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 04/11/2025). MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1006 for this issue.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 44109 (HP Power Manager < 4.2.10), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CGI abuses.
Upgrading to version 4.2.7 eliminates this vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 9452.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (44109), SecurityFocus (BID 37873†), SecurityTracker (ID 1023470†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-24674†).
