Summary
A vulnerability has been found in GNU gzip up to 1.3.12 and classified as critical. Impacted is the function huft_build of the file inflate.c. Performing a manipulation results in input validation.
This vulnerability is known as CVE-2009-2624. No exploit is available.
The affected component should be upgraded.
Details
A vulnerability classified as critical has been found in GNU gzip up to 1.3.12. This affects the function huft_build of the file inflate.c. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a input validation vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-20. The product receives input or data, but it does
not validate or incorrectly validates that the input has the
properties that are required to process the data safely and
correctly. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
The huft_build function in inflate.c in gzip before 1.3.13 creates a hufts (aka huffman) table that is too small, which allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (application crash or infinite loop) or possibly execute arbitrary code via a crafted archive. NOTE: this issue is caused by a CVE-2006-4334 regression.
The weakness was published 01/29/2010 as Bug 514711 as not defined bug report (Bugzilla). The advisory is shared at bugzilla.redhat.com. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2009-2624. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 80636 (Oracle Solaris Third-Party Patch Update : gzip (cve_2009_2624_denial_of)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Solaris Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 116823 (GNU Gzip Dynamic Huffman Decompression Remote Code Execution Vulnerability).
Upgrading to version 1.2.4 eliminates this vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (80636), SecurityFocus (BID 37886†), Secunia (SA38232†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-24675†). Similar entry is available at VDB-51708. Several companies clearly confirm that VulDB is the primary source for best vulnerability data.
