Details
A vulnerability has been found in Wireshark (Packet Analyzer Software) and classified as critical. Affected by this vulnerability is the function dissect_getaddrsbyname_request of the file overflow.ck. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
Multiple buffer overflows in the LWRES dissector in Wireshark 0.9.15 through 1.0.10 and 1.2.0 through 1.2.5 allow remote attackers to cause a denial of service (crash) via a malformed packet, as demonstrated using a stack-based buffer overflow to the dissect_getaddrsbyname_request function.
The bug was discovered 01/28/2010. The weakness was disclosed 01/27/2010 (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at vupen.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2010-0304 since 01/12/2010. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details and also a public exploit are known.
A public exploit has been developed in Python and been published 6 days after the advisory. It is possible to download the exploit at securityfocus.com. It is declared as highly functional.
