Details
A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in McAfee Web Gateway 7.0 (Firewall Software). This issue affects an unknown code of the component HTTP Header Host Field Parser. The manipulation as part of a CONNECT Request leads to a access control vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-264. Impacted is integrity. The summary by CVE is:
** DISPUTED ** McAfee Web Gateway 7.0 allows remote attackers to bypass the access configuration for the CONNECT method by providing an arbitrary allowed hostname in the Host HTTP header. NOTE: this issue might not be reproducible, because the researcher did not provide configuration details for the vulnerable system, and the observed behavior might be consistent with a configuration that was (perhaps inadvertently) designed to allow access based on Host HTTP headers.
The weakness was disclosed 04/13/2012 by Gabriel Menezes Nunes as not defined mailinglist post (Bugtraq). The advisory is shared at seclists.org. The public release happened without involvement of McAfee. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2012-2212 since 04/06/2012. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1068 for this issue.
A public exploit has been developed by Gabriel Menezes Nunes in Python and been published immediately after the advisory. The exploit is available at seclists.org. It is declared as proof-of-concept. We expect the 0-day to have been worth approximately $5k-$25k. The real existence of this vulnerability is still doubted at the moment.
Addressing this vulnerability is possible by firewalling .
The vulnerability is also documented in the vulnerability database at OSVDB (81165†). packetstormsecurity.org is providing further details. The entry VDB-5176 is pretty similar. Several companies clearly confirm that VulDB is the primary source for best vulnerability data.
