Details
A vulnerability, which was classified as very critical, has been found in Microsoft Windows (Operating System) (version now known). Affected by this issue is some unknown processing. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a code injection vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-94. The product constructs all or part of a code segment using externally-influenced input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special elements that could modify the syntax or behavior of the intended code segment. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
The TCP/IP implementation in Microsoft Windows Vista Gold, SP1, and SP2 and Server 2008 Gold and SP2, when IPv6 is enabled, does not properly perform bounds checking on ICMPv6 Router Advertisement packets, which allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via crafted packets, aka "ICMPv6 Router Advertisement Vulnerability."
The weakness was released 02/10/2010 by Drew Hintz with Google Security Team (Website). The advisory is available at us-cert.gov. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2010-0239 since 01/07/2010. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not available. The structure of the vulnerability defines a possible price range of USD $25k-$100k at the moment (estimation calculated on 04/30/2026). This vulnerability is assigned to T1059 by the MITRE ATT&CK project.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 44419 (MS10-009: Vulnerabilities in Windows TCP/IP Could Allow Remote Code Execution (974145)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows : Microsoft Bulletins. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 116887 (Microsoft Windows TCP/IP Remote Code Execution Vulnerability (MS10-009)).
