A vulnerability was found in RealNetworks RealPlayer 1.0.6 (Multimedia Player Software). It has been declared as critical. This vulnerability affects the function Unescape. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. Buffer overflow in the Unescape function in common/util/hxurl.cpp and player/hxclientkit/src/CHXClientSink.cpp in Helix Player 1.0.6 and RealPlayer allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (application crash) or possibly execute arbitrary code via a URL argument containing a % (percent) character that is not followed by two hex digits.

The weakness was disclosed 02/18/2010 (Website). The advisory is shared for download at helixcommunity.org. This vulnerability was named CVE-2010-0416 since 01/27/2010. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Technical details and also a public exploit are known.

It is possible to download the exploit at exploit-db.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. As 0-day the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k.
