A vulnerability was found in RealNetworks RealPlayer 1.0.6 (Multimedia Player Software). It has been declared as critical. This vulnerability affects the function Unescape. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
Buffer overflow in the Unescape function in common/util/hxurl.cpp and player/hxclientkit/src/CHXClientSink.cpp in Helix Player 1.0.6 and RealPlayer allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (application crash) or possibly execute arbitrary code via a URL argument containing a % (percent) character that is not followed by two hex digits.
The weakness was disclosed 02/18/2010 (Website). The advisory is shared for download at helixcommunity.org. This vulnerability was named CVE-2010-0416 since 01/27/2010. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Technical details and also a public exploit are known.
It is possible to download the exploit at exploit-db.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. As 0-day the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 44428 (CentOS 4 : HelixPlayer (CESA-2010:0094)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CentOS Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 155701 (Oracle Enterprise Linux Update for HelixPlayer (ELSA-2010-0094)).
