Mozilla SeaMonkey up to 2.0.2 HTML Parser code injection

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in Mozilla SeaMonkey (Web Browser). It has been rated as critical. This issue affects some unknown processing of the component HTML Parser. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a code injection vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-94. The product constructs all or part of a code segment using externally-influenced input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special elements that could modify the syntax or behavior of the intended code segment. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

Use-after-free vulnerability in the HTML parser in Mozilla Firefox 3.0.x before 3.0.18 and 3.5.x before 3.5.8, Thunderbird before 3.0.2, and SeaMonkey before 2.0.3 allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via unspecified method calls that attempt to access freed objects in low-memory situations.

The weakness was released 02/22/2010 by Martijn Wargers (Paul) with Martijn Wargers as Bug 526500 as not defined bug report (Bugzilla). It is possible to read the advisory at bugzilla.mozilla.org. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2009-1571 since 05/06/2009. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available. The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1059 according to MITRE ATT&CK.

It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 68000 (Oracle Linux 3 / 4 : seamonkey (ELSA-2010-0113)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Oracle Linux Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 118843 (Red Hat Update for Xulrunner Firefox (RHSA-2010:0112)).

Upgrading to version 1.0.9 eliminates this vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (56361), Tenable (68000), SecurityFocus (BID 38286†), Secunia (SA37242†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-24874†).
