Linux Kernel 2.6.23 resource management

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel 2.6.23 (Operating System). It has been classified as problematic. Affected is some unknown processing. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a resource management vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-399. This is going to have an impact on availability. CVE summarizes:

drivers/connector/connector.c in the Linux kernel before 2.6.32.8 allows local users to cause a denial of service (memory consumption and system crash) by sending the kernel many NETLINK_CONNECTOR messages.

The issue has been introduced in 10/09/2007. The weakness was presented 02/22/2010 by Sebastian Krahmer (Website). The advisory is available at kernel.org. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2010-0410 since 01/27/2010. The exploitability is told to be easy. Local access is required to approach this attack. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not available.

It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 867 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 47271 (Fedora 11 : kernel-2.6.30.10-105.2.23.fc11 (2010-1804)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Fedora Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 165591 (SUSE Enterprise Linux Security Update Linux Kernel (SUSE-SA:2010:023)).

There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (56079), Tenable (47271), SecurityFocus (BID 38058†), Secunia (SA38492†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-24983†).
