Debian dpkg up to 1.10.14 path traversal

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Summaryinfo

A vulnerability has been found in Debian dpkg up to 1.10.14 and classified as problematic. Impacted is an unknown function. Performing a manipulation results in path traversal. This vulnerability is reported as CVE-2010-0396. No exploit exists. The affected component should be upgraded.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, was found in Debian dpkg up to 1.10.14. This affects an unknown part. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a path traversal vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-22. The product uses external input to construct a pathname that is intended to identify a file or directory that is located underneath a restricted parent directory, but the product does not properly neutralize special elements within the pathname that can cause the pathname to resolve to a location that is outside of the restricted directory. This is going to have an impact on integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

Directory traversal vulnerability in the dpkg-source component in dpkg before 1.14.29 allows remote attackers to modify arbitrary files via a crafted Debian source archive.

The weakness was disclosed 03/15/2010 (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at debian.org. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2010-0396. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available. The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1006 according to MITRE ATT&CK.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 45027 (Debian DSA-2011-1 : dpkg - path traversal), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Debian Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 118213 (Fedora Update for dpkg (FEDORA-2010-4410)).

Upgrading to version 1.10.15 eliminates this vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (56887), Tenable (45027), SecurityFocus (BID 38654†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-25053†). Be aware that VulDB is the high quality source for vulnerability data.
