A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in Linux Kernel 2.6.16.9 (Operating System). This issue affects the function gfs_lock. The gfs2_lock function in the Linux kernel before 2.6.34-rc1-next-20100312, and the gfs_lock function in the Linux kernel on Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) 5 and 6, does not properly remove POSIX locks on files that are setgid without group-execute permission, which allows local users to cause a denial of service (BUG and system crash) by locking a file on a (1) GFS or (2) GFS2 filesystem, and then changing this file's permissions.
The issue has been introduced in 03/20/2006. The weakness was released 03/16/2010 by Eugene Teo as Bug 570863 as confirmed bug report (Bugzilla). It is possible to read the advisory at bugzilla.redhat.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2010-0727 since 02/26/2010. Attacking locally is a requirement. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 1457 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 60760 (Scientific Linux Security Update : GFS on SL3.x i386/x86_64), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Scientific Linux Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 118854 (Red Hat Update for Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5.5 Kernel (RHSA-2010:0178)).
