Linux Kernel 2.6.16.59 denial of service

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a denial of service vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-404. The product does not release or incorrectly releases a resource before it is made available for re-use. This is going to have an impact on availability. The summary by CVE is:

The Linux kernel 2.6.9 through 2.6.17 on the x86_64 and amd64 platforms allows local users to cause a denial of service (panic) via a 32-bit application that calls mprotect on its Virtual Dynamic Shared Object (VDSO) page and then triggers a segmentation fault.

The issue has been introduced in 03/20/2006. The weakness was shared 03/19/2010 by Fabian Yamaguchi (Website). The advisory is shared at rhn.redhat.com. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2009-4271. An attack has to be approached locally. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available.

The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 1460 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 68013 (Oracle Linux 4 : kernel (ELSA-2010-0146)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Oracle Linux Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 155686 (Oracle Enterprise Linux Update for Kernel (ELSA-2010-0146)).

There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (68013), SecurityFocus (BID 37521†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-25506†).
